If you are looking for a solution to track the source of your signups, an excellent option for most use cases is to utilize the Referral Code. While this option won’t work for all situations, it can be a very effective tool for tracking if customers signed up as the result of a social post or a QR code used at an event to name a few examples.

When customers join your mailing via the website, you may have the option where customers tell you how they found you by choosing from a list of options in the "WHOM MAY WE THANK FOR THE INTRODUCTION?" selections or if they add a note in the "Comments" field. While this can provide you with some insight, the burden is on the customer to provide accurate information. This does not always provide the specifics you need to see what marketing efforts are the most successful. For example, a customer could tell you they heard about you via "Social Media" during signup, but on which platform? Maybe you have a booth at a wine event where folks can scan a QR code with a link to join your mailing list, but you want to know the exact event that inspired them to join. This can all be done with a few small tweaks to your URL to add this information to the customer's account.

To demonstrate, let's stick with the example of a Social Media post that encourages people to join your mailing list. To gather the info, all you need to do is add ?ref= to the end of your signup URL and then choose a name for the code. If your signup page is https://members.yourwinery.com/ you can add the ?ref= to the end of the URL and then choose an ad name so it looks like this: https://members.yourwinery.com/signup/?ref=adname. You will want to replace "adname" with a code name of your choosing like "Instagram" or "Zinfest" to track the specific signup source.

Next, insert this link in your post and when the customers click that link, the unique URL will appear at the top of their browser like in this example:

When you want to see your results, you can find the "adname" code in their account next to the "Referral Code." To view this on an individual account, open a customer account and then scroll down to the CONTACT INFO heading to view the Referral Code:

You can also view this information for multiple customers in the customer export by going to the Customers page and choosing Export > Export All Customers. The information will appear in the "referral_code" column header of the .csv file where you can use this info to report on your success. You can also view this information using customer exports on other pages such as the Groups page.
